Portugal wins 24 Tourism “oscars”

Portugal has been the most awarded country during the World Travel Awards 2016

During yesterday’s World Travel Awards ceremony in Sardinia, Portugal won 24 prizes in the European categories, the best score ever achieved (14 in 2015), recognising the strengh and quality of the tourism sector in Portugal.

Turismo de Portugal was elected, for the third consecutive year, Europe’s Leading Tourist Board.

Several Portuguese regions were also awarded:  the Algarve was elected Europe’s Leading Beach Destination, Madeira was considered Europe’s Leading Island Destination and Lisbon Europe’s Leading  Cruise Destination and Europe’s Leading Cruise Port.

Further, TAP Portugal was awarded the titles of Europe’s Leading Airline to Africa and Europe’s Leading Airline to South America, as well as Europe’s Leading Inflight Magazine (Up). Several Portuguese tourism projects also brought awards to Portugal and 13 other prizes were atributed to Portuguese hotels.

This election awarding the Portuguese destinations and the national tourism offer demonstrates Portugal’s capacity to establish as one of Europe’s Leading Tourism Destinations. It is thanks to all people involved in this sector in Portugal that the country’s growth rate in tourism is higher than 10%.

Ana Mendes Godinho, the Portuguese State Secretary for Tourism added: “We are very proud with these awards, which are at the same time a great incentive to continue permanently qualifying our regional destinations and our offer, as well as constantly inovating in order to respond to the world market’s demand”.

The 22nd edition of the World Travel Awards took place Sunday, September 4th in Sardinia, Italy. Created in 1993, the World Travel Awards recognise the work developed in the tourism industry worldwide, stimulating competitiveness and quality in Tourism. The selection of nominees is done by tourism professionals all over the world, who choose their favourites.
