Monday 20th October 2014. London. The hotly anticipated film ‘Night train to Lisbon’ hits UK cinemas this Friday, 24th October, starring the Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons.  Follow in the footsteps of Irons and co and head toLisbon this autumn to discover the exquisite charm of the Portuguese capital.

The film is a spell-binding thriller taking viewers on a journey with Raimund Gregorious, (Jeremy Irons), compelling him to suddenly abandon his boring life and embark on an enthralling adventure inLisbon. Visitors can re-create their own Portuguese adventure by visitingLisbon’s historic districts and the main streets of Rua da Bica and Rua Misericordia, the location for the majority of the filming.

Pascal Mercier’s novel ‘Night Train to Lisbon’ is the inspiration for the film from Danish director Bille August. The filming took place inPortugalat the request of Billie August himself. He described the Portuguese people as having a ‘charming innocence’. He was adamant the filming needed to take place in the city ofLisbonin order to showcase the city’s natural charm.

The production team used the winding alleyways and stately buildings of the city to recreate both the contemporary shots as well as the historical scenes in the movie. Guests can be taken back to  16th century Lisbon by visiting the Church of Carmo and Castelo (castle) de Sao Jorge or find themselves back in modern day Lisbon with a ride on the tram.

Central Lisbon is compact enough to explore on foot and most sights in Baixa, Bairro Alto and Alfama are within walking distance. Getting around the outer areas of the city is easy with a tram route, modern subway lines, trains and buses to choose from.

Lisbon is the ideal autumn weekend city break destination for UK holidaymakers. The city is less than a three hour flight from London and TAP Portugal, easyjet, BA and Ryanair. TAP Portugal also fly from Manchester to Lisbon.
